Pesky Pescatarians

Happy Senior Health and Fitness Day!
Happy What You Think Upon Grows Day!!

How's life?

So, today I took the Accuplacer test that is required in order to be in PSEO. The deadline for all of this ish is quickly creeping up on me, and I still need to attend an orientation. Miraculously, I was able to get into an orientation scheduled for tomorrow - this is a blessing because all other orientation dates are either full or when I am out of town. Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou heaven!

Now, for personal crap de McCall:

I have difficulty keeping to my goals. I lose motivation and any resolve as soon as my will is challenged - and of course I am speaking about food.

I have been trying to eat healthier, and I have been taking preventative measures, such as bringing healthier foods to a choir party that we had today. Unfortunately, as soon as I laid eyes on the pizza, I was a goner. I went the whole nine yards, which involves three different kinds of chips, some cake, donuts, etc. Well, I ate a strawberry.

That must count for something.

Seriously, though I am sick of it.

Sick of myself.

I need to stop this. I want to be so firm that a hurricane, no, a black hole couldn't move me.

So.

As of NOW I will be good.

Let's see how long this lasts.

It is not only nutrition. I also want to improve in scripture reading, exercising, social ish, and overall laziness. No more forgotten goals.

This will be a revolutionary summer.

Take a look at this guy:

Now is that inspiration or what?

Honestly, that is so amazing. Just look at the improvement - another great story is Taralynn from UndressedSkeleton:

She has embraced a healthy lifestyle like no other. Not only is her fitness admirable, but her personal struggles in her life are truly inspirational.

Things have been a little health crazy lately in McCall's world.
It doesn't help when in science we are researching heart diseases and you get to see the negative effects these fats and sugars.

I'm half convinced I should become pescatarian. Or I could move to Japan. Learn from the best.

What do ya think?

McCall

Quotes From Cool People

Happy Whit Monday, or Memorial  Day!

From Tumblr:
I wish we said “fancy” in America. As in, “I fancy you.” It’s such a more agreeable term than “I have a crush on you.”  What’s a crush? Like, I AM A BOA CONSTRICTOR AND I AM GOING TO IMMOBILIZE YOU WITH MY MISPLACED AND OBSESSIVE AFFECTION.  “I fancy you” is like, you’re so shiny and glittery and I just want to put you on a shelf and look at you for a while ‘cause you’re fancy.

From my cousin's Facebook statuses:

"The understanding of who we really are, what that really means, and what that means we can become can absolutely change our bearings in life. It can effect every choice we make, the way we treat others, and how we see ourselves.
It is pivotal." ~The Redheaded Hostess

"Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured." ~President Hinckley

"Live in such a way that if anyone should speak badly of you, no one would believe it. ~Unknown

"Stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more of the SUNLIGHT."
- President Hinckley

"If you want to be interesting, be INTERESTED."
- Unknown

"You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty."
- Mahatma Gandhi

"Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical." ~Sophia Loren

"You can be excellent in every way. You can be first class. There is no need for you to be a scrub. Respect yourself. Do not feel sorry for yourself. Do not dwell on unkind things others may say about you. Polish and refine whatever talents the Lord has given you. Go forward in life with a twinkle in your eye and a smile on your face, but with great and strong purpose in your heart. Love life and look for its opportunities." ~ President Gordon B. Hinckley

"You were not put on this earth to fail, but to succeed gloriously."
-Elder Richard G. Scott, LDS General Conference 2012 :)

"Don't feel stupid if you don't like what everyone else pretends to love." - Emma Watson

“The best antidote I know for worry is work. The best cure for weariness is the challenge of helping someone who is even more tired. One of the great ironies of life is this: He or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served.” President Gordon B. Hinckley

From Ryan Christensen:

"To all the students who drop out and fail high school: Remember two things, 1. You tried your best. 2. I don't like pickles on my BigMac."

"I think all vests save you from stuff, lifevests save you from drowning, bullet proof vests save you from being shot, sweater vests save you from hot women."

"What doesn’t kill you makes you smaller." - Mario

"Dinosaurs are lies fed to us to cover up the existence of Pokemon."

"I wonder if the clothes in China say 'made around the corner '"

"We Pronounce 22 as TwentyTwo, 33 as Thirty Three, 44 as FortyFour, 55 as FiftyFive, Why not 11 as OnetyOne?"

"I don't know what's more awkward, answering Dora or sitting in silence whilst she stares at you."

"I've always wanted to walk up to a stranger and hand him a briefcase and whisper 'you know what to do' and walk away."

"I love using big words to sound smart. I mean utilizing gargantuan idioms to fabricate intelligence."

"I watched Transformers today, and I've spent the past 2 hours in my garage telling my car I know his secret... He's shy."

Honor

Happy Cellophane Tape Day!

honor - [on-er]
noun
1.
honesty, fairness, or integrity in one's beliefs and actions: man of honor.

For the longest time I have had a fascination with honor. What is it? Where is it?
I read stories of daring princes and fencing lads who are willing to die in order to protect this mythical creature, known as honor. This whimsical little blighter dances its way through our tales and is a reminder of the past - but where is it now?

Only a few decades ago, young men had a strange little trait called class. They had style, they cared about doing good, if only to uphold their name. Of course there were a few parasites, some who took advantage of the righteous intent of those around them, but it was not uncommon to find a classy, chivalrous guy.

Where is that attitude now?

No longer is this mindset respected in our world - people will go to any length to get what they want, and how they get their desire is shoved out of mind. "Following the rules", or taking the more difficult road has no value in our society - we want results, and we want them now.

In English we are discussing different philosophers and their views on justice - what is ethical, and what is immoral?

I find myself in agreement with both Immanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill

Kant believes that the means is more important than the end.
For example, on a Sunday you try to make a dessert for your roommate because she has been stressed lately. You whip up a batch of your famous cookies, and excitedly await her reaction. Unfortunately for you, she needed those ingredients for a home ec final and now cannot pass the class because she cannot afford more food/it is Sunday. You cost her several hundred dollars because you used her food without permission.

According to Kant, this is just.

You meant well.

However, by using her food without permission, you basically make a statement to the world that it is fine for anyone, at any time, under any circumstance, to take something without asking. You just gave the man on the street permission to take your car, you gave the random couple permission to take a child without asking.

So, perhaps this is unjust, if you feel that the new "rules" you created by your actions are not acceptable.

Mill believes that the end is more important than the means.
Say, for example, that you were commanded to retrieve some brass plates that were being held by a stingy ruler in 600 B.C. Jerusalem. You are denied multiple times to have the plates, but the Lord told you to get them, so get them you must. During your nightly stroll, you come across the hoarder himself, and given the circumstance, you kill him and whisk the plates to safety in the wilderness. These plates are then handed down for hundreds of years and are the salvation of an entire nation.

According to Mill, this is just.

Even though you murdered a human being and stole his property, the lives saved exceeded the lives lost. The happiness that resulted in your actions was much greater than the pain required to get the result.

I find both of these theories make sense.
I shouldn't lie, even if I feel as if it will not hurt anyone.
But sometimes you must act for the greater good.

So how do you decide which theory to follow?

I have no idea.
Pray for inspiration, I suppose.

Now, for an important question that has haunted me since my early childhood:

Someone should write a book about that ish.

And isn't this pretty clever:

"Strength is the ability
to break a chocolate
bar into four pieces
with your bare hands
and then eat just
one of those pieces."

Current Cravings

So, I have been craving healthy food.

That is really weird for me.

These past few weeks I have tried eating healthier, watching what I consume, avoiding the bad fats, and yet I didn't really notice much of a difference in my life. In our home we really do not have a lot of healthy options, so this took a lot of energy and effort. On Monday I grew tired of being so careful all the time and I decided to eat what I normally would for one week. The result?

I feel nasty.

I feel tired, have blurred vision and dizziness after exercising, I feel lazier, and I just am craving fresh fruits and veggies all the time.

But I normally hate veggies.

Hopefully, we can go shopping tonight for some better food.
Hopefully, I can make a permanent resolution.
Hopefully, I will do three things this summer: eat healthier, exercise daily, and go outside.

Wish me luck?

I have mentioned Taralynn from Undressed Skeleton before, but this girl is truly amazing. Look at some of her recipes sometime, and take the time to read her bio. You will be glad you did.

My current craving:
This lunch from her blog

And these spring rolls from her blog.

She is actually such an incredible role model to me - read her story and you will understand.

Le Chef

Happy Julia Pierpont Day!

Remember my little "all of the cute dresses are immodest!" rant the other day?
Well, with summer coming up, another bother is finding cute shorts.

Cute & Immodest:

Ugly & Modest:

I only wish that I had the skill to turn these awkward pieces of cloth into unique, stylish bottoms that even the non-mormons at school would envy.

Last night, I had a sleepover with my friend Sam and Abby.  At some point we were retelling a few of our most prized memories as children, and Abby and I recalled our "cooking competitions." In reality, we would just toss together simple ingredients such as cereal, add a few decorations, and call it a gourmet meal, but it was one of our favorite activities. After we did our magic, we would eat each other's creation, crossing our fingers that it involved chocolate.

So, in honor of our past traditions, we had a little cooking party of our own this morning.

Abby's:

She started with a piece of round toast and put granola and chocolate chips on top - then she made us some chocolate milk. Did I mention the Nutella on the side? Pro.

Sam's:
She coated mini marshmallows in graham cracker crumbs and added the mixture to chocolate ice cream - it was actually very good despite the dessert's simplicity.

McCall's:

I had crescent rolls with black cherry topping and apple slices, then frozen yogurt (made from frozen gogurts - classy, I know) and vanilla wafers.

Pretty sure we are the best chefs in town, hands down.

Even better than Mrs. Weasley.

Speaking of Harry Potter, I have two announcements:
1) Sam created her account today and was blessed to become a member of Slytherin.
2) Marissa... well, we will say she is a Ravenclaw.

She took the test.
And was sorted into Hufflepuff.

The horror.

She knew that it must have been a mistake, so she registered under a different email.
And was sorted into Gryffindor.

But it still felt wrong.

Finally, with another email, she was rightfully sorted into her house.
Ravenclaw.

I assured her that the mishap occurred due to a hex placed on the sorting hat by some mischievous fifth years.

Little rascals.

But everything is all fine and dandy now. Life is good.

Alex

Happy International Tiara Day!
Happy Old-Time Player Piano Day!

Um... so I am very bad at keeping goals.

Ooops.

So much for "posting every day."

Awkward.

Anyway, on Tuesday my friend Alex committed suicide - he jumped in front of a train during school hours, but we didn't hear of it until the next day - they were unable to contact his Dad until later that night, so they kept it from even his closest friends.

He was such a sweetie.

He was the Rabbi at my wedding.
Abby's adoptive father.

Yeah, he was a theatre kid.

He had a Deadmau5 shirt, and I would tease him about his plans to go to our rival school.
He shaved his head to play Daddy Warbucks.
He was in the ninth grade honors choir.
He didn't show up for the 8th grade concert on Tuesday night - Grove Singers was supposed to perform, and they did, but they only had five guys. We were wondering where Alex went.
He was just the nicest person.

It still hasn't sunk in yet.

Apparently he did what he did due to bullying.

The kids who are responsible are suspended for their own safety - the rest of the Junior High student body is not on their best terms, apparently.

This was the 7th suicide in 5 years. We have issues.

Mosiah 16:7-9

"7 And if Christ had not risen from the dead, or have broken the bands of death that the grave should have no victory, and that death should have no sting, there could have been no resurrection.

8 But there is a resurrection, therefore the grave hath no victory, and the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ.

9 He is the alight and the life of the world; yea, a light that is endless, that can never be darkened; yea, and also a life which is endless, that there can be no more death."

I had the inspiration to write a really insightful, completely understandable post.

But it is 11:01.

And I just ate almost eight smores.

Whoops.

So... g'nite!

And please pray for his family. And his friends. He had such a tight group, I can't even imagine what they are going through.
